Problems with cloudy water? Drain your spa!

This clear water could be yours!

A lot of different factors can contribute to water clarity. We will be sharing some tips we’ve learned over the years with you over the next few articles. We’re confident that following a few simple steps will ensure you have sparkling clear water all the time!

First, let’s start with the basics:

When is the last time you drained your spa?
Spa water should be drained about every 3-4 months, but there is always a chance your spa will need to be drained more often. Consider how often your hot tub is used. In the spa world, “high use” of a hot tub is considered 2 or more people, 3+ times a week. (And 2 people in a spa is like having 30 people in a pool!)

Also keep in mind that an average person produces 1 pt of sweat per hour in a hot tub. Consider 2 people using the tub for 1 hour, 3 times a week= 6 pts of sweat, 24 pts per month. etc. etc. You get the picture- eventually you’re not really soaking in water- ew! So, it’s best for water clarity to drain the spa at least every 3-4 months!

  1. Hey there,

fellow pool and spa guy here. It is actually quite strange how hard it is to get some people to go ahead and drain their spa. I have customers come in all the time with water tests trying to get their 6 month old spa water clear again!

I usually talk to them about dissolved solids and such , but from now on I’m using the sweat stats to get them to drain when they need to.

    Great blog btw.
