Cleaning your hot tub filters & replacing them periodically is important to keep your hot tub working properly. Dirty filters can cause restricted flow through the pumps (the jets won’t be as strong) and even cause your hot tub to shut down. Different hot tub brands use different types of filters so be sure to consult your owner’s manual for your specific brand, but here are some general rules to follow:
Cleaning a Standard Hot Tub Filter
The most common hot tub filter is made from a light polyester fabric. The pleats run vertical between a plastic top & bottom. With proper care and cleaning, your filter(s) should last anywhere from 1-2 years.
Chlorine/Bromine based water care system
- Soak your filter(s) in a filter cleaning solution every time you drain your hot tub.
ACE Salt Water System
- Hose your filter(s) off monthly
- Soak your filter(s) overnight in a filter cleaning solution every 4-6 months
BaquaSpa water care System
- Every 2 weeks, hose down your filter(s).
- Every 2 months, soak the filter(s) in the BaquaSpa filter cleaning solution.
Cleaning a Hot Spring Tri-X Filter
If cared for properly, a Hot Spring Tri-x Filter can last up to 5 years.
Chlorine/Bromine based water care system
- Hose your filter(s) off monthly OR put them in the dishwasher with no soap, no rise aid and the air dry cycle only.
- Soak your filter(s) in a filter cleaning solution every time you drain your hot tub.
ACE Salt Water System
- Hose your filter(s) off monthly OR put them in the dishwasher with no soap, no rise aid and the air dry cycle only.
- Soak your filter(s) overnight in a filter cleaning solution every 4-6 months
BaquaSpa water care System
- Soak the filters in BaquaSpa filter cleaning at least every 3 months. Do not put your filters in the dishwasher.
Other Hot Tub Filters
Other common hot tub filters include the Micro Clean II filter from Sundance Spas. This filter is disposable and should be replaced every 6-9 months. Do not clean this filter in a filter cleaning solutions.
Sundance Spas also used the Micro Clean system with a standard filter plus a small disposable white Micro Clean filter. This disposable filter should be replaced every 3-4 months. The standard filter can be cleaned as referenced above.
